Just two hours from Panama City, El Valle de Antón is the kind of place that makes you breathe deeper as soon as you arrive. Tucked inside the ancient crater of a long-extinct volcano, this highland town is a green, misty retreat where city residents often escape for cooler air and slower days.

The weather alone is a welcome change—while Panama City stays hot and humid, El Valle often hovers in the 70s (especially at night), and yes: you’ll want to pack a sweater.

🌿 A Volcano Crater Turned Village

Local lore says that the volcano here erupted so violently it blew its own top off, leaving behind a massive caldera where the town now sits. You’re quite literally standing inside an old volcanic crater—but instead of ash and lava, it’s lush greenery, bike paths, winding roads, and blooming gardens.

Why We Keep Coming Back

My family and I return to El Valle often, and each visit reminds us why this town holds such quiet magic. Here are a few of our favorite things to do on a weekend visit:

🦋 1. Visit the Butterfly Haven

One of our favorite stops is El Mariposario (The Butterfly Haven)—a serene, screened enclosure filled with fluttering butterflies, where the family who runs it takes the time to explain their life cycle and habitat. It’s educational, peaceful, and surprisingly moving for kids and adults alike.

⛰ 2. Hike to

La India Dormida

One of El Valle’s most well-known hikes is to the ridge called La India Dormida (The Sleeping Indian Woman). Local legend tells of a heartbroken princess, betrayed by her lover, who laid down and never woke up—the mountain’s outline is said to resemble her resting form.

The hike itself is accessible from town, with clearly marked signs and beautiful views at the top. Bring water and sturdy shoes—it’s a manageable climb for most families with active kids.

🛍 3. Explore the Artisan Market

The local artisan market is most vibrant on Sundays, though Saturdays are great too. You’ll find everything from:

  • Handmade baskets in all sizes

  • The iconic sombrero pintado (woven Panamanian hat)

  • Beadwork, bracelets, and carved bowls

  • Fresh flowers, fruits, and vegetables from the surrounding farms

It’s a wonderful way to support local artists while picking up one-of-a-kind souvenirs.

🥘 Where We Eat

Don’t miss La Casa de Lourdes if you’re in the mood for an elegant lunch, but if we’re craving comfort food, our family favorite is Donde Gonn—a humble Colombian spot with fresh empanadas, rich rice plates, and five-star flavors.

🏞 Bonus Tips

  • Stay overnight if you can—sunset and early morning are the most peaceful times.

  • Walk or bike the town—El Valle is unusually pedestrian- and bike-friendly, with good sidewalks and bike lanes.

  • Check the weather—it can be cool and misty, so pack layers.

Whether you’re visiting Panama for a week or you’ve lived here for years, a day or weekend in El Valle de Antón is always worth the drive. It’s the kind of place that reminds you why this country holds so much natural beauty—and why we keep coming back.

About Me

About Me

Hi, I’m Brownie —the voice behind Roaming Routes.

I started this blog after more than two decades of traveling regularly to Panama—on solo trips, family getaways, and everything in between. Over the years, I found myself answering the same questions for friends and family: Where should we stay? What’s actually worth doing? Where can I find a good empanada? Eventually, I realized… I had the answers, and they were worth sharing.
